Future Changes in Biological Activity in the North Pacific due to Anthropogenic Forcing

چکیده

Many studies have examined the physical changes expected in the environment as a result of anthropogenic forcing. These physical changes will have an effect on ecosystems as well. In this study, a nitrogenphytoplankton-zooplankton (NPZ) model is used to examine the effects of environmental changes on primary productivity in the North Pacific ocean. The physical variables considered are mixed layer temperature and depth, solar insolation, and large-scale upwelling. The changes in these fields by the 2090s are taken from a coupled ocean-atmosphere general circulation model forced by projected atmospheric CO and sulfates, then applied to the NPZ biological model. The result is a 20-30% reduction in primary productivity in a belt of longitudes across the North Pacific. This happens because the region where spring blooms occur moves northwards in response to the anthropogenic changes. The region left behind (which had spring blooms in the 2000s, but does not in the 2090s) is less productive when averaged over a year. In other regions, productivity increases as warmer surface waters enable higher growth rates. Changes in mixed layer temperature and depth account for almost all the changes in productivity; model-predicted changes in surface insolation and large-scale upwelling have little impact.

A Link between the Hiatus in Global Warming and North American Drought

Portions of western NorthAmerica have experienced prolonged drought over the last decade. This drought has occurred at the same time as the global warming hiatus—a decadal period with little increase in global mean surface temperature. Climate models and observational analyses are used to clarify the dual role of recent tropical Pacific changes in driving both the global warming hiatus and Nort...

Global Distribution and Climate Forcing of Marine Organic Aerosol-Part 2: Effects on Cloud Properties and Radiative Forcing

A series of simulations with the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5) with a 7-mode Modal Aerosol Model were conducted to assess the changes in cloud microphysical properties and radiative forcing resulting from marine organic aerosols. Model simulations show that the anthropogenic aerosol indirect forcing (AIF) predicted by CAM5 is decreased in absolute magnitude by up to 0.09 W m−2 (7 ...

Solar and Wastewater Effects on Zooplankton Communities of the Imandra Lake (Kola Peninsula, Russia), 1990 to 2003

Both heliophysical and anthropogenic (wastewater) effects on zooplankton biomass and abundance of the Imandra Lake (the largest subarctic lake at Kola Peninsula, Russia) were investigated during the 1990 - 2003 period. We used different indexes of solar activity (sunspot numbers and UV- radiation values) as heliophysical factors. Information about UV- radiation values was derived from satellite...

Attribution of cyclogenesis region sea surface temperature change to anthropogenic influence

[1] Previous research has identified links between tropical cyclone activity and sea surface temperatures in the tropical cyclogenesis regions of the North Atlantic and Western North Pacific. Other work has demonstrated that warming in these regions is inconsistent with simulated internal variability. After evaluating the variability of a suite of climate models on a range of timescales, we use...
